There are roughly 600 resorts marketing themselves as honeymoon destinations across Bali, Lombok, Komodo, and Sulawesi. Most are perfectly fine. Eleven of them are great. Here’s the list, with the honest case for each.
Bali — clifftop and inland
1. Bvlgari Resort Bali, Uluwatu. The cleanest design language, the most reliable service, no amateur hour. Two-bedroom cliff villas if your budget allows. The brand carries the experience exactly as you’d expect Bvlgari to. Best for: couples who care about design more than swimming.
2. Six Senses Uluwatu. Newer, more rambunctious than Bvlgari, more activity-driven (yoga, surfing, watsu). Better food than Bvlgari by a margin. Best for: active couples in their 30s.
3. Capella Ubud. 22 tents, riverside, fully forested. Theatrical luxury. Best for: couples who’ve been everywhere and want to feel like they’re in a different category.
4. Como Shambhala Estate, Ubud. Wellness-led. The food is genuinely thoughtful (most Como properties’ food disappoints — this one doesn’t). Best for: couples who want spa + diet structure as the core of the trip.
5. Bambu Indah, Sayan. Architecturally radical. Reclaimed Javanese houses set into a river valley. Not for everyone — bathrooms are open-air, no AC in some rooms. Best for: design-curious couples comfortable with rustic.
Komodo — boutique resorts
6. Plataran Komodo Resort. The only premium beachfront resort in the National Park. Direct boat access from your villa. Best for: couples who want a Komodo experience without committing to a phinisi liveaboard.
7. AYANA Komodo Waecicu. Bigger, more amenity-rich. New brand integration with the Bali AYANA. Best for: couples who’d find Plataran too small.
Lombok and Gilis
8. Sudamala Suites Senggigi. Quietly excellent. Beachfront, mid-tier pricing, food is consistently good. Best for: couples who want Lombok without overpaying for the Mandalika cluster.
9. Hotel Tugu Lombok. Cultural property, antiques and Indonesian art. Owner-operated. Best for: couples who’d rather feel a place’s history than be in a five-star bubble.
The Spice Islands and Sumba
10. Nihi Sumba. If you only know one thing about Indonesian honeymoons, you’ve heard of Nihi. It deserves the reputation. The Spa Safari, the surf, the staff training — everything is at the level it claims. Best for: couples who can spend $2,500-$5,000/night and want the trip to be “the one we’ll talk about for 20 years.”
11. Cika Cika, Banda Neira. A 6-room boutique guesthouse. Not luxury, but memorable. We send couples here as the second leg of a Bali-then-Spice-Islands trip. Best for: adventurous couples who’ve already done the standard Bali honeymoon and want their next trip to feel like they’re somewhere nobody else they know has been.
Resorts we don’t recommend (unsolicited honesty)
A few well-marketed properties consistently disappoint our clients. We’d rather you know up front: the Mulia Bali (overpriced for what it is), Hard Rock Bali (not a honeymoon property), and most “private island resort” claims around the Gilis (mostly day-trip beach clubs with one overnight room).
